Montauk Without a Car: What It’s Really Like & How to Make It Work

“Can I visit Montauk without a car?” is one of the most common questions I get. Between train schedules, summer crowds, and how spread out things to do in Montauk can be (depending on what you want to do!), it’s not always obvious how you choose to get to Montauk and whether a car-free trip is actually feasible.

The truth is, visiting Montauk without a car can work but it really depends on where you stay, how long you’re visiting, and what kind of trip you’re hoping to have. A fun weekend near town feels very different from a longer stay where you want to explore beaches, hikes, or restaurants farther out.

Below, I’ll walk through what visiting Montauk without a car actually looks like and how to decide if it’s the right choice for your trip.

What It’s Actually Like Visiting Montauk Without a Car

Visiting Montauk without a car works best when you stay in town in a central location. That’s where a car-free trip feels easy instead of limiting. You can walk to plenty of restaurants and bars, spend your days at the beach, and fill a long weekend without feeling like you’re constantly backtracking or stuck.

There’s more to do in town than people expect. The town beaches are great and have lifeguards in season, there’s shopping, mini golf, and Montauk Brewing Company is an easy walk as well. You can also access Shadmoor State Park right from town, which is one of the best hikes in Montauk and doesn’t require a car.

Where things change is when you want to venture farther out. Visiting restaurants by the docks, Montauk Point Lighthouse, other hikes around Montauk, fishing trips, or sunset at Montauket will all require a cab or Uber. These spots aren’t necessarily far – they’re just not walkable and taxis and Ubers in Montauk can be expensive. That doesn’t mean you can’t do them, but it does mean being mindful about what’s worth the extra cost.

How Walkable Is Montauk?

If you’re visiting Montauk without a car, it’s important to know that town is the most walkable area. This is where a car-free trip feels easiest and most enjoyable, which is why staying central matters so much if you won’t be driving.

Montauk Town vs More Spread-Out Areas:

Montauk town is compact and easy to navigate on foot. You can walk between restaurants, bars, shops, and the beach without feeling like you’re constantly trekking long distances. For a long weekend, there’s more than enough here to keep you busy whether you want full days out or a slower, beach-forward pace.

Outside of town, Montauk becomes much more spread out. Areas like the docks, the lighthouse, and many trailheads aren’t walkable from town and require a cab or Uber. These places aren’t necessarily far – they’re just not designed for walking.

What “Walkable” Really Means in Montauk:

Staying in town means you can walk to:

  • Town beaches: Kirk Park / Umbrella Beach and South Edison (Nick’s)
  • Restaurants: 668 The Gig Shack, Harvest on Fort Pond, Alimentari Beach, Sausages Pizza, Mostrador Marram, Bird on the Roof, John’s Pancake House, Joni’s, Left Hand Coffee, and John’s Drive-In
  • Bars: (which are a big draw in summer) Shagwong, The Point, Memory Motel, Bounce Beach, and Montauk Brewing Company
  • Things to do: shopping around town, Puff & Putt mini golf, ice cream at John’s Drive-In, tasting beer at Montauk Brewing Co., visiting the Montauk Indian Museum, and hiking Shadmoor State Park which is accessible from town
  • Seasonal: Montauk Farmers Market on Thursdays during the summer

Seasonal Differences:

In the summer: it’s much easier to get around without a car. Town is lively, everything is open, and staying central makes a car-free trip feel very doable. There are also more taxis and Ubers available for when you want to get somewhere not in walking distance.

In the off season: Outside of peak summer months, Montauk slows way down, and without a car, your trip will naturally be more limited. There are less taxi’s and Ubers driving around but they are still around!

How to Get Around Montauk Without a Car

If you don’t have a car in Montauk, getting around mainly comes down to walking, taxis, or biking. Each option works best in specific situations.

On foot (around town): walking works very well if you’re staying centrally. Restaurants, bars, shops, town beaches, mini golf, Montauk Brewing Company, and Shadmoor State Park are all walkable from town. Once you leave this area, walking becomes much less practical.

Taxis & rideshares: taxis and Ubers are the easiest way to reach places that aren’t walkable, like restaurants by the docks, Montauk Point Lighthouse, other hikes, or sunset at Montauket. These trips aren’t necessarily far, but rides can be expensive, so it’s worth being intentional about what’s worth the extra cost.

Biking: biking can work in Montauk, but it’s not always as easy as people expect. Parts of town are quite hilly, which can be challenging if you’re on a beach cruiser or not a confident biker. Biking at night also isn’t very safe, especially during the busy summer months, due to dark roads and traffic.

Pro Tip: Rent a bike from Montauk Cycle Company

Where to Stay in Montauk without a Car

If you’re visiting Montauk without a car, staying in town is the most important decision you’ll make. Being walkable to food, beaches, and things to do will matter far more than amenities when you won’t be driving.

Boutique hotels in town:
If you want something more design-forward and intentional, Hero Beach Club and Marram Montauk are two of my favorite boutique options. Both are on the outskirts of town but still close and make a no-car stay feel easy and special.

Classic, casual stay:
For a more affordable option right in town, Daunt’s Albatross is a great motel-style choice with great design and one of my favorite breakfast restaurants Bird on the Roof.

Oceanfront, walkable options:
If being on the beach matters the most and the boutique hotels are out of budget Royal Atlantic Beach Resort and Montauk Blue Hotel are both oceanfront right in the center of town. They both feature more standard style hotel rooms.

  1. Hi, great tips for Montauk and thank you. Is there a local bus in Montauk by any chance?

    1. There is a bus called the Hampton Hopper that does a loop around town and also Ride Circuit that does more local rides around Montauk downtown.
