The Best Time to Visit Montauk

There isn’t one single “best” time to visit Montauk – it really depends on what kind of trip you want. Montauk feels completely different in the middle of summer than it does in September and drastically different in the winter months. Montauk works for everything from a busy summer beach vacation to a quiet off-season escape which is why the best time to visit Montauk really depends on what you want your trip to feel like.

If you want the full beach-town energy, busy restaurants, nightlife, and everything open, summer is the best time to visit. It’s also the most crowded and expensive, so it helps to go in knowing that upfront. If you’re looking for (usually) good weather with fewer crowds, late spring and early fall are my favorite times. And if you’re visiting for quiet beaches, long walks, and a slower pace, the off-season can be really special – you just need to know what will (and won’t) be open.

Below, I’ll break down what each season in Montauk is actually like, plus a quick month-by-month snapshot so you can choose the right time to plan your trip. Once you know when you’re visiting, figuring out how long to stay becomes much easier.

Summer is peak season in Montauk. This is when the town feels the most alive with busy beaches, packed restaurants, and a lot more energy day and night. For many people, summer is the best time to visit Montauk if a classic beach vacation is the goal.

That said, summer also comes with crowds and higher prices. Hotels book up quickly, restaurant choices matter and traffic can shape your arrival and departure more than you might expect. Planning ahead, including how to get to Montauk, makes a big difference, especially for long weekends.

Summer works best if you want beach days, nightlife, and plenty of options for food and activities, and you’re okay trading some quiet for atmosphere. If that’s what you’re looking for, Montauk really shines this time of year.

Montauk in Shoulder Season (May, September, October)

Shoulder season is a favorite time to visit Montauk for many. You still get good weather (September beach days are the best!) and outdoor days, but the pace is noticeably calmer than peak summer and the crowds half that of summer. For travelers looking for fewer crowds and more affordable accommodation this is often the best time to visit Montauk.

In May, Montauk is just starting to wake up for the summer with Memorial Day Weekend being the official kick off of summer. Some places are just opening for the season, the town feels fresh, and it’s a great time to experience all that Montauk has to offer.

September and October are especially good if you want warmer days, fewer crowds, and easier reservations, with much of Montauk still fully open. It’s easier to move around, easier to plan last-minute meals, and the overall experience feels more relaxed without losing the energy that makes Montauk special.

Montauk in the Off-Season (November–April)

The off-season in Montauk is quiet, calm, and very different from summer. This is when the town slows down, crowds disappear, and Montauk feels more local and low-key.

Winter and early spring are best for long beach walks, hikes, and unplugged weekends rather than packed itineraries. Not everything is open, and hours can change week to week, so checking ahead of time is super important! That said, the places that are open tend to be favorites, and the slower pace is part of the appeal.

The off-season is a great fit if you’re visiting to reset, spend time outdoors, or even experience a spa weekend at Gurney’s! If you’re expecting full beach days, nightlife, and lots of dining options, summer or shoulder season will be a better choice.

The Holidays in Montauk

The holidays are one of the few times Montauk feels a little more alive during the off-season. The weekend after Thanksgiving, Montauk Point Lighthouse hosts its annual holiday lighting, with Santa on-site and a festive, small-town feel that’s especially fun if you’re visiting with kids.

A few weeks later in December the town hosts the Magic of Montauk Holiday Fair, where you can meet Santa and his reindeer, shop small vendors, grab drinks, and listen to live music. Restaurants also lean into the season – Bird on the Roof does a great job decorating and offering holiday cocktails and festive themed nights, which adds some energy during a quiet time of year.

The week between Christmas and New Year’s is also a bit busier with people coming out for the holidays. More places are open, the town feels busier, and Gurney’s hosts a large New Year’s Eve party that draws visitors in for the weekend.

March: Still slow, but you’ll start to feel Montauk waking up when the town hosts the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

April: Early spring brings slightly better weather and more open businesses, but it’s still local and uncrowded.

May: Spring weather is unpredictable in Montauk. The summer season starts to ramp up at the end of the month. Most restaurants, shops and activities are open.

June: Early summer energy without peak-season chaos. Beaches aren’t crowded, most places are open, and it’s easier to plan.

July: Peak summer. Busy beaches, packed restaurants, nightlife, and the most classic Montauk summer vibe.

August: Same as July – still peak season. Crowds remain high, but the beach atmosphere is hard to beat!

September: A favorite. Warm water, great weather (usually), fewer crowds, and a noticeably more relaxed pace.

October: A great month for a comfortable fall feel – hiking, beach walks, brewery afternoons and lively weekends. A lot of places will close after Columbus Day Weekend mid October.

November: Very quiet aside from Thanksgiving weekend. Short days, fewer options, but peaceful if you know what to expect.

December: Mostly quiet, with a bit more energy around the holidays and between Christmas and New Year’s.

Quick Decision Guide

Choose summer if you want a classic beach vacation with busy restaurants, nightlife, and everything open and you’re okay with crowds and higher prices.

Choose shoulder season if you want good weather, possible beach days and outdoor time with fewer people and a more relaxed pace.

Choose the off-season if you’re visiting to slow down, walk empty beaches, hike, and enjoy a quieter, more local version of Montauk – and don’t mind the limited options!

There’s no wrong time to visit Montauk, but the right time depends on what you want the trip to feel like.
