Why You Need to Visit La Parguera, Puerto Rico
La Parguera is a small coastal town on Puerto Rico’s southwest coast but what makes it unique are the mangrove islands, or cays, just off its shores. Plus – a bioluminescent bay to be experienced at night too!
I’ve been to La Parguera many times over many years because it is that great you’ll want to come back. There are many ways to experience this beautiful region of Puerto Rico and it’s a great day trip for couples, friends or families with small children. My favorite things to do are rent a small boat in town, load up with drinks and snacks for the day, head to the mangrove cays, sunbathe, swim and snorkel!
It’s honestly just such a fun day and absolutely stunning! You need to add this spot to your Puerto Rico bucket list.

Things to do in La Parguera
Rent a Boat and explore La Parguera
Once you get into the village of La Parguera there are a few options for boat rentals. I would recommend Torres boat rental (where we always rent from) or Hooked on Adventure. Both will have the same hour or daily rates which are $50/hour.
The only requirement is a valid ID, a signed rental agreement and being 21 years of age or older. The boats are small skiffs but can fit 4-6 people and its a super fun way to see La Parguera on your own time.

The Full-Day Private Cruise in Cayo Caracoles offered by Mareaito Charters also includes snorkel equipment!
Explore the Mangrove Cays
The below cays are the most visited and the easiest to get to due to their proximity to where you leave from in La Parguera town:
- Cayo Barolo
- Cayo Caracoles
- Isla Mata la Gata
- Cayo Enrique
Snorkel along Cayo Caracoles
The waters surrounding Cayo Caracoles are typically calm and shallow, providing excellent visibility for snorkelers. There is a break in the mangrove and this is where you snorkel between them. The area is home to a variety of tropical marine life and the mangrove ecosystem offers a unique snorkeling experience.
Respect the Environment: Avoid touching or stepping on the coral reefs and marine life to preserve the delicate ecosystem & don’t forget to take with you what you brought!
Party at Cayo Caracoles
Coming to La Parguera for the day just to day party is a really popular activity! Many boats anchor up in the sand at Cayo Caracoles. People will bump their music, jump in the water, swim and drink all day long. The bottom is sandy and the water is shallow enough to stand.
It is a really fun way to spend the day at La Parguera.
Pro Tip: don’t be alarmed if you see a big fish or two or three swimming around! There are large Tarpon that swim around in the shallows but they don’t bother you!
Picnic and Swim at Isla Mata la Gata
Isla Mata la Gata has a fenced in natural swimming pool with a dock around the perimeter. This used to be a great spot to bring a family with kids! I say used to be becuase last time I was there the dock was not in great shape after multiple storms.
What also makes Isla Mata la Gata great is the picnic facilities and open air shelters. As you can maybe guess by the name Isla Mata la Gata is the only named island you can really walk on and explore.
La Parguera’s Bioluminescent Bay
This is a really cool and unique experience! La Parguera is one of three Bio Bay’s in Puerto Rico.
There are microscopic organisms in the water that when disturbed at night (like paddling, swimming or riding a boat) will emit a glowing blue green color on the water. While La Parguera is not the brightest Bio Bay in Puerto Rico (you’ll have to go to Vieques Mosquito Bay for that!) is it the only one where you can swim in the water, making it unique.
If you haven’t experienced a Bioluminescent Bay before and you have time to stay for a Bio Bay tour in La Parguera I would definitely recommend it!
